Curren$y – Smokee Robinson Mixtape
Common Market
By Urbansocialight
So during the DMV’s Snowpocalypse 2010, I was able to catch up on a lot of stuff. I actually cleaned up which was a task in and of itself. I caught up on some movies and some TV. And while watching CurrenTV I stumbled upon a show on music from the Pacific Northwest. Most of the bands were a little weird even for my taste, but I did however discover the hip-hop genius duo out of Seattle known as: Common Market.
Common Market is your typical 1 rapper (Ryan “RA Scion” Abeo) and 1 producer/DJ (Alexei Saba “Sabzi” Mohajerjasbi), but with atypical results. No newbies in the game, the pair has been making music together since 2005, and it’s clear they’ve reached a comfortable stride together; it just sounds right. So good in fact that KRS-One invited the on tour with him after hearing an advanced copy of their first album also called “Common Market”. Since then, they’ve released 3 more projects together, including the critically acclaimed “Tobacco Road”.
If anyone is longing to hear music that is both genuine and relevant; smart and funny, then you will be able to appreciate Common Market. While it was snowing I kept watching the video for their track “Tobacco and Snow Covered Roads”, in which RA Scion spit about typical plights of a rapper, shows getting cancelled, other rappers stealing beats, beef, all while he just really wants to dig out of the snow to get a pack of cigarettes. You’ll love “Trouble Is” which tells the story of a farmer, who is rejected by the community where he settles. I can only assume it’s a metaphor for gain acceptance in the hip-hop community. You know typical CrabzInABarrel behavior.
Kenzie May- Sleepyhead (A Cappella Cover)
We’re going international with this one. Kenzie May is an artist out of the UK and she has crazy talent. Here she does a cover of Sleepyhead by Passion Pit with nothing but her voice and a hand claps. As you can see its pretty crazy. She sings, writes her own music and plays the piano and guitar. Someone needs to sign this girl to a record deal ASAP and bring her to the US. I’ve been a fan since I saw her in a video on youtube with Dyme-A-Duzin. Check out her myspace page for some of her original music.
Big Sean “Supa Dupa Lemonade”
Over 100,000 views on youtube in 7 days. Big Sean is doing it big on the internets. I don’t think he is going to be opening for Wale at Sonar anymore…
In Your Closet-FASHOLUTIONS
So it’s February, and by now there’s no doubt you’ve given up on whatever New Year’s resolutions you made. You know: lose weight, Land my dream job, Get organized blah blah blah. But it’s never too late to make some Fashion Resolutions aka Fasholutions!
My Fasholutions for the masses in 2010:
1) Wear clothes that fit. Improper fit has to stop. A good tailor or seamtress is well worth it. I’m short my pants rarely fit off the rack. I go get them hemmed and they fit like magic.
2) Just because it comes in your size doesn’t mean you should wear it. Backless dress with back fat umm not hot. Ripped leggings with cottage cheese thigh ugh. Must I continue?
3) Trendy doesn’t equal stylish, I’m sorry skinny jeans for guys can’t be good for your sperm count.
4) If your not comfortable in it don’t wear it. Those that are comfortable in their clothes exude and aura of confidence
5) REMIX!! Times are hard you can’t go out and buy a new outfit everytime you have a new social event. Accessorize. Scarves, necklaces, bracelets, rings all create the illusion of a new ‘fit.
6) Lastly have fun with fashion. If you want to wear it then wear it with conviction!
Here are some of my personal, Manda J Fasholutions:
1) Purchase a decent pair of sneakers. Sneakers can be stylish without appearing to be too athletic.
2) Wear more dresses because they are feminine, and I feel sexy in them.
3) Remember QUALITY or QUANITY 10 pair of black flat shoes from Forever 21 or one pair of Tory Burch flats. Hmm Investment purchases are worth it.
4) Wear more fuchsia and pinks because they compliment my skin tone.
5) Stylish Chic for 2010, think classic meets modern. June Ambrose is the epitome of stylish chic.
Bun B – No Mixtape
Ok when I first posted this I just put it up without listening to it because its Bun B and never puts out garbage. But after listening to it, this is a must download for everyone. Bun B is still one of the hardest rappers in the south. Gotta love that Trill music.
Nicki Minaj – Barbie World
This is actually pretty good. Its for the ladies but its worth listening to regardless. Especially if you trying to find out what Nicki Minaj is all about.
