T.I.- I’m Back

By Urbansocialight

T.I. is ATL’s hometown hero and he will be released from a halfway house later this month.  But since his release from prison he’s been hard at work in the studio making new music and fans can expect his album to drop on August 24.  T.I. will also be releasing the first movie produced by his studio Grand Hustle Films on August 20th.

I remember the first song I ever heard from T.I. circa 2001/2002 off of I’m Serious.   The crabzinabarrel would have never guess the  trap boy would blow up and become a mega star, even after doing a little bid.

Balmain + Borcade = Beyonce?

Balmain RTW Fashion Show 2010

By Manda J

While NY fashion week took place in February, it’s still fashion week somewhere in the world! Right now it’s the City of Lights (Paris for those who don’t know) fashion week. European style is very different from American style. Europeans tend to be more trendy and sophisticated. On the other hand American style tend to be very practical and girl next door.

Balmain, designed by Christophe Decarnin, recently showed it’s Fall RTW 2010 line. The items in the line have Beyonce’s and Rhianna’s name written all over it. There’s a different spin on the military jacket. Brocade jackets long and short are a trend in this line. Here are some of the pieces I loved. Just thought I’d share.

Oscar Recap

By Urbansocialight

The Oscars are notoriously boring.   But this year wasn’t so bad.  I loved the banter between Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, they were just going on people (which George Clooney didn’t seem in the mood for).  It was a big night for the DMV, with Mo’Nique being from Bmore and Sandra Bullock being from Arlington. Plus the street dancing at the end was hot!  I’m no movie blogger but I do love movies.  I watched 8/10 best picture movies and many of the other nominated including the documentaries.

There were no real surprises and I think all the wins fell exactly where they should have, except I think the Oscar for Documentary Feature should have gone to Which Way Home, which was one the best movies I’ve ever seen in my LIFE and not The Cove.

For some reason people who saw Avatar (but probably didn’t see anything else) expected them to sweep. Ummmm, nothing about the movie was extraordinary extra the visuals.  It was something beautiful to look at, but it was the same old love story of Pocahontas, Dancing with Wolves, hell Save the Last Dance.  Any movie where a new comer is introduced to a society, tries to adapt, and then fights back against how they were raised.  It won the awards it was supposed to get for Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects.

Ok I liked Precious.  It was well written and well acted but I think it got the two awards it deserved.  But people acted like it was a conspiracy because they didn’t win everything. Mo’Nique was easily the Best Supporting Actress, but her speech wasn’t relevant and she thanked her husband and BET instead of the director Lee Daniels.   Samuel L. Jackson is getting slack for giving Mo’Nique the side eye after her wack ass speech…but we got your back SLJ! The writing was awesome so Best Writing for an Adapted Screenplay Geoffrey Fletcher deserved that.  Picture of the Year, it was not.  Best Actress…Gabby did good but my personal favorite was Carey Mulligan for An Education, but Sandra winning was ok too.   Don’t try to take my black card!

Diamond District-Euro Tour

By Urbansocialight

One of my favorite hip-hop groups Diamond District (Oddisee, Y.U. and X.O.) just came off of their first (but definately not last) European tour which also featured Trek Life and DJ Quartermaine.   Oddisee (who’s also a gifted photographer) captured flix and pics of them on the road.  To celebrate their first tour, we’re posting some of the footage from the tour!

I listen to “In the Ruff” every other day, no B.S.  I even listen to the clean verison at work so as not to offend the coworkers, lol.

Please support them, because they make real hip hop music.  Download Diamond District on iTunes.

I’d love to see a collabo w/ them and an ill female rapper like Boog Brown.  That would make my life 🙂 Anywho enjoy the vids!

Tatted Up!!

By Urbansocialight

I’m obsessed with tattoos.  I admire other people’s tattoos.  I Google pictures of cool ones in my spare time. I’ve been to the tattoo parlor to watch other people get theirs.  Oh, but I don’t have any.  And not because I don’t like pain or whatever dumb excuse people who don’t have tattoos make up, but there has been no event, person, place, or thing that makes me want to get one.

People can get tattoos of anything and it’s a genuine art form.  There are some talented tattoo artists out here, too.  They’re work is brilliant, and probably deserves to be hanging on someone’s wall.

Some people think it’s stupid to get a person’s name or initials on them, not me.  I think that it signifies at that moment in time you felt so strongly about that person that you wanted to make it last forever.  I can’t knock that. Pharrell recently went through the painful laser removal of tattoos across his entire upper body, so I’m guessing  he got some tats he regrets.

One thing I don’t buy into is the myth that getting a tattoo makes you different or original.  Really, we all want to be super original, but the truth is none of us really are.  That’s why groups of people have the same tastes in music, clothes, and entertainment.

“You are unique! Just like everyone else.” – Dee Dee’s Mom

I was on Twitter today and MarsMcFly pointed out that he mixes up Wiz Khalifa and Tyga… I realized I did too!  Not their songs or lyrics of course, but them.  They look alike because the way they express their originality, with full body tattoos, is the same.  It’s seriously hard to tell them apart.

So a question to the public, why did you get tatted up?  What makes your tatt’s truly one of a kind?  Do you have any you regret?  Who you do let your kids get a tattoo?  If so, how young is too young?

Monica in McQueen

By Manda J

Monica’s newest video “Everything to Me” has clothes that look like they came straight off the runway…in fact they did. In the video Monica is wearing a houndstooth shirt from the late Alexander McQueen’s RTW fall 2009 line. In that line the shirt Monica is wearing was actually a dress, tailored into a shirt and the chicness is still the same. The shoulder flower may seem like a bit much, but with her slick hair and minimal accessories the flower becomes the accessory. The different size pattern also makes a difference. The pattern is widest around her arms and smaller around her face. That helps the print to not seem overwhelming.

The red dress is also by McQueen. The dress is pretty basic, but the shoulder detail and back bustle steps it up. In this video Monica went for classy and sophistication and I think she achieved it. *RIP Alexander McQueen*

Enjoy the video!
